It is customary for godparents to present the baby with a gift at the Christening. This is usually a carefully chosen keepsake that will be treasured for a lifetime, so choose carefully.
There are many items available, but what springs to mind when you start your search for the perfect gift? Traditional gifts are first bibles, which can be personalised. When thinking of christenings, items made out of silver are prominent, like bracelets, a cross, a silver cup; which can all be engraved. Then there are silver piggy banks or money boxes, photo frames with your godchild’s photo in it. A silver cutlery set, or a ceramic cup and dish set; usually with a nursery rhyme theme, is also quite popular.
Another religious theme is a first rosary in a pink or blue ceramic trinket box. Or why not buy a soft toy lamb, representing the lamb of God, as an extra little present which can be used by baby straight away? You could buy a personalised plate, a set of framed baby hand and foot prints or a ‘Bless this Child’ plaque to hang on the wall.
Perhaps you want to set up a savings account and deposit some money into it, or pass on a family heirloom, like a painting or a treasured piece of embroidery. Some godmothers knit or crochet shawls, bonnets or booties, which can be handed down to the next generation. Another idea is to commission a painting of mother and baby or pay for a photography session.
Personally, we think a certificate of baptism holder is an original and lasting gift from a godparent at a christening. It is quite unique in its use. It comes in the form of a ceramic or silver tube, which can be displayed in a cabinet or on a shelf.
I find a baby’s time record book or a beautiful photograph album is a lovely present, too. It can be a good incentive to keep records and photographs along every step of the way during the first few months of a baby’s life and provide an invaluable record of someone’s early youth.
