A christening is an important part of a child's life. It is intended to bequeath them their name, officially introduce them to friends and family, and set their spiritual path for the future.
As part of this, the parents of the new baby are often given gifts for the child. These can either be for use while the child is tiny, kept for when they are older, or simply a keepsake of a very special day from someone who cares about the family.
There are various ways of personalising a christening gift. Let's look at some examples, and the gifts they can be applied to:
Photographs: Pictures of mum, dad and baby can simply be put in a pretty frame. You can also have photos printed onto mugs and enlarged onto posters or canvas.
Embroidery: You can make or buy a sampler with the baby's name and date of birth on as a keepsake, or you can purchase clothes, bibs, and romper suits with names machine-embroidered in.
Engraving: Silver gifts are traditional for a christening, and can range from jewellery to dressing-table sets (mirror, brush and comb) and teacups. Generally the baby's name and date of birth are engraved in a copperplate-style script onto the largest piece of a set.
Personalised gifts can make a child and their family feel special, both on christening day and later on. Many people still have a framed photo or an engraved baby bangle from their christening in their homes, even into their old age. Personalisation is easy and relatively inexpensive, but will bring a smile to everyone's face when put on a christening gift.
